Continuing its mission as an economic growth engine for new and existing Eastside businesses, local non-profit San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside announced seven new SAGE Store-Front grants and five Choice Façade Improvement grants. Bringing the total investment in exterior upgrades this quarter to $70,000 in SAGE Store Front grants and $125,000 in Choice Façade Improvement grants.
The SAGE Store-Front Grant Program provides qualified property owners an opportunity to improve their properties with grants that must be matched dollar-for-dollar, and are available only to commercial property owners. Grants are awarded to commercial properties located within the Eastside Promise Zone, which are the boundaries for the SAGE service area. The SAGE Choice Façade improvement grant program provides matching funds up to $25,000 for exterior improvements to commercial properties located in the Choice Neighborhood footprint. This is a partnership with the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) and funds are provided by HUD as part of the
“The SAGE Store-Front Grant program was designed to encourage the revitalization of our Eastside commercial corridors,” said SAGE Chief Executive Officer Jackie Gorman. “In addition to promoting investment on the Eastside and fostering redevelopment, the matching funds we provide to these businesses also support job growth and bring new services to residents in surrounding neighborhoods.”
The deadline to submit applications for the next round of matching grants is Friday, March 31, Gorman noted.
Store Front Grant Recipients:
*Alamo Inn Motel. (2203 E. Commerece):
Alamo Inn Motel was built in 1994 and has operated as a hotel/motel since. Currently owned and operated by Rakesh & Aditi Vazir the awarded grants will help with the following; Exterior painting, addition of a stone exterior, and signange. Pavers, landscape improvements, lighting, fencing and exterior stucco.
AAMCO Southeast (5038 Rigsby):
AAMCO Transmissions opened in the summer of 1984 and has grown within the franchise for over 30 years. AAMCO started with three employees and has grown to eight, Owner Charles Clay plans to continue growing. The awarded grant will provide assistance with signage, rock facade, entry way repair, lighting, parking lot re-pavement and landscaping
*Rich Financial Ltd-Security Loan Co. (1301 Lamar):
A family owned pawnshop that has been in business for over 60 years in the community who is relocating and looking to continue to grow. Richard Warncke, President/Owner will use the awarded grant to assist with pavement repair, landscaping installation, and emergency door replacement, signage and security camera installation.
CGRE Ltd (504 Austin)
The old “La Fama Bakery” property designated a local landmark will soon house an operating business again. Christopher Gill Property Owner and Managing Member of CGRE Ltd. Co. will use the awarded grant to assist with the cost of lighting, rebuild of front roof, new door and window installation and front building redesign.
Microteq Engineering Inc. (3003 Aniol St.)
A small manufacturing company currently located on I-10 near downtown but soon will be making the eastside of San Antonio their new home. Vaishali “Sally” Dev owner of Microteq Engineering will use the awarded grant for exterior wall repairs, exterior painting and window replacement.
Bar-N Auction Co./ East Yard Club (1213 Duval St.)
Originally Reid’s Pharmacy on the first floor and a rooming house on the second floor serving the Southern Pacific railroad workers from 1910 until 1922. Etta James and Jackie Gleason are just two of the notable visitors of the East Yard Club during the 1940’s. Owners Brett and Silva Neal will use the awarded grant for façade wood replacement, window and door replacement, signage restoration, front stair repair and exterior painting.
Dignowity Meats (1706 E. Houston)
Dignowity Meats established in 2014, specializes in fresh, affordable lunch and dinner options targeting the downtown and eastside areas. Dignowity Meats since opening has become a fun local hangout for the surrounding neighborhoods and San Antonio Tourist.
Choice Façade Improvement Grant Recipients
Gideon USA (2243 E. Commerce)
Gideon is a military engineering and construction contractor this property has been vacant for 12 years. Gideon employs veterans and minorities. Jade Sheppard, President and Owner will use the awarded grant to assist with new stucco wall installation, front roof repairs, exterior painting, wood slat feature installation and new windows.
Teresita’s Mexican Restaurant
Opened in 2001 as Mexican Restaurant, has continued to grow and has become a food treasure on the eastside. Located on N New Braunsfuels ave which is a vibrant eastside economic corridor, will use the awarded grant to assist with exterior structure restoration, new window installation, exterior lighting and painting with new signage.
In the Black Holding Co (2230 E Commerce St)
The property has been revamped for its historical value, it previously was a residential dwelling that has been turned into a class c office space. This office space will house an internet radio station and tax preparation service that will host 14 employees collectively. Kim Nolan CEO of In the Black”, will use the awarded grant to create handicap parking and pavement of the parking lot, signage, lighting and security improvements.
